My good neighbors, Al and Diana, have been bringing their grandkids to the garden every Tuesday this Summer....they call it "Vegetable Tuesday"....
I think they call Wednesdays, "Fruit Wednesdays", and Thurdays are "Treat Thursdays".
This Tuesday was their last Vegetable Tuesday of the year....school starts back up again next week and the garden will be closing soon....
That's just sad.....on so many different levels.
THE U-Pick GARDEN will be closing August 20th. This will be the last year the garden will be open to the public. Next year I'll be operating as a CSA, supplying about 20 regular customers with weekly boxes. Thank you for your support over the last 8 years, but it's time to try something new.
To get a copy of my book, "How To Grow Vegetables In Sitka, Alaska" just give me a call....The books are $20 plus tax. If you live out of town and want me to mail you a copy, you can mail a check for $25.60 to:

How To Pick Cauliflower
There is some beautiful Cauliflower out at the U-Pick Garden right now that's ready to pick...
So it's time for another tutorial, and "U-Pick Man" agreed to show us how to get it done!
Thanks, U-Pick Man!

HOW TO PICK CAULIFLOWER
1. Pick out a fully mature Cauliflower head.
Cauliflower is edible at any stage of maturity, but each plant only produces one head during its lifetime, so it is important to know how to tell when a head is fully mature. It should have a flowerhead made up of "curds" that are tightly formed.....
When the curds are starting to separate it's called, "Ricing"......
The goal is to let the heads mature RIGHT UP TO THE POINT where they want to start ricing.
White Cauliflower heads often start to take on a slightly purple tinge....
This does not affect the flavor at all. In fact, some varieties of Cauliflower are shockingly purple!
2. Grasp the Cauliflower head with one hand while using the other hand to cut the head loose from the plant above the root but below most of the leaves, using a serrated knife.
The root is very tough so you don't want to cut too low, but the stem of the cauliflower plant is delicious so you don't want to cut too high.
3. Cauliflower leaves are edible and can be used like Kale so you can take them home......but if you don't want them you can cut them off here at the U-pick garden and I will compost them....
4. It is a good idea to check under the leaves for slugs...sometimes you can flush them out by using the hose.
Large Cauliflower heads are $5.00 each.

U-Pick Man
Levi did a "SUPER" job with the garden while I was out of town....
Apparently he used his "SUPER POWERS" on the vegetables, because everything is doing so well!!
The Cauliflower is incredible...
The "God" turnip is bigger than ever....
The Rat-Tailed Radish plants are just loaded with Radish pods....
I've never seen so many pods!
There's so many pods that the plants are starting to fall over!
The second planting of radishes is up and ready to be picked....
And the Peas.....Holy Cow, the Peas!! There just doesn't seem to be any stopping them!!!
The green Snow Pea Pods are huge...
And the yellow variety of Snow Pea is really impressing me with how many Pea Pods it's producing...
When I left I was worried that there wasn't enough produce left in the garden, but I am astounded by the volume of produce that's here... Broccoli Sprouts, Leeks, Carrots, Beets, Cucumbers....Thanks Levi!
p.s. this sudden surge in production might have something to do with the fact that the sun was shining the whole time I was gone or that I mulched all of the beds with seaweed, but....?

Blackberry Love
Today I picked Blackberries with my Dad....
Picking Blackberries is one of my absolute favorite things to do when I am visiting home. The ripe berries smell and taste so good....they're so fragrant and sweet....
And it was nice to spend some time with my Dad...
Picking Blackberries comes with a price.....the thorns are vicious and it's usually hot outside....But there's just nothing like "Blackberry Love"...

Everyone Lives In The Country
When I stand in the field behind my Sister's house I can look to my right and see my parent's house...the house I grew up in....
Just across the road from their farm I can see my Cousin's farm....
Straight ahead of me is my Sister's house....
A little to the left I can see the old site of the 3-roomed grade school I attended when I was a child, and just behind that is my Second Cousin's farm....
And on my left, off in the distance, I can see another Cousin's farm, and just beyond that is my Brother's farm....
Everyone I know here lives in the country.
Country people raise sheep....
They barbeque hogs for special events....
And they grow amazing things like grapes...
Corn...
Hydrangeas......
Apples....
And tomatoes....
I miss my garden.
