I'm sorry to say that Scott's body was recovered today. The link to the story is here .
It's a sad story with a sad ending. The only thing to be thankful for is closure for the family. Far too many people in Alaska have lost family members in the wilderness and live without closure. Please continue to hold up Scott's family in prayer.
THE U-Pick GARDEN will be closing August 20th. This will be the last year the garden will be open to the public. Next year I'll be operating as a CSA, supplying about 20 regular customers with weekly boxes. Thank you for your support over the last 8 years, but it's time to try something new.
To get a copy of my book, "How To Grow Vegetables In Sitka, Alaska" just give me a call....The books are $20 plus tax. If you live out of town and want me to mail you a copy, you can mail a check for $25.60 to:

Search And Rescue
One undeniable reality of living in Southeast Alaska is that it's harsh, unforgiving country. For most of us the wilderness starts right outside our back door.
It's altogether too common for someone to end up missing or injured just because they took a hike. There's a very effective and active Search and Rescue team here in Sitka and we are all so grateful for what they do. Sadly, there is a boy missing right now....
It's heartbreaking to think of what his family is going through....I mean, what if it was one of my boys?
Mr. Adams has experience searching for people in the woods, so this morning he headed down to the Fire Department to volunteer his services.
Please pray for this boy, his family, and the Search and Rescue team tonight.....

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things
Here are some of my favorite things.....things that make me happy...
Connie has been living with us, and every morning she makes me an iced coffee, and when I get up it's in the refrigerator waiting for me in my giant mug....
She's leaving tomorrow, so I will have to make it now myself.
Kitty....all snuggled up in the quilts.
Levi says that a house without a cat is not a home.....and I wholeheartedly agree.
This cast iron bank...
You place a coin on the end of the gun barrel and press down the hunter's foot, and the coin flies into the bear's belly.
This cast iron nut cracker...
Mr. Adams found it at a garage sale for $1.00.
I love this clock...
It's a new clock that is made to look old. Mr. Adams and our friend Skip found it at a little junk shop way off the beaten path back in the woods for just $3.00.
This is Ben's 2013 Calendar.....
I love it when a month is practically clear of pressing commitments!
These mugs are beautiful....
It's like celebrating Christmas every day!
This my electric sewing machine that I use at home....it sews like a dream.
My Mother bought it for me when I was about 13 (and not the least bit interested in sewing). She found it in the classified ads and went out alone one dark and stormy night to buy it...brought it home and showed it to me and I was not impressed. Granted, I had good reason, I WAS RIGHT in the middle of watching my favorite show on TV and didn't want to be interrupted. WOW!! if we could only go back in time and fix all the stupid things we did when we were young. Oh well, Mother was not to be deterred....she sanded down the cabinet and re-varnished it and was so patient.....and in time I came to LOVE sewing....just like her!
My Dad made these awesome coasters for us....
They are slices from Black Walnut tree branches from his farm....Aren't they just the coolest thing ever? I love the thick, black, chunky bark and the rich brown colored rings.
But the thing I love most in our cozy little house is this....
The woodstove. It truly is the center and heart of our home...it's what makes it warm and inviting....and friends who come driving up our driveway are always glad when they see smoke coming from our chimney!

Everything And Nothing
People have asked me lately, "What have you been up to?" and I don't know how to answer them. I mean, on one hand I'm just chilling with no urgent deadline - doing whatever I want to do, but on the other hand I'm busy, busy, busy all day long. So, I'll try to answer the question.... in no particular order, here's the Reader's Digest Condensed Version of what I've been up to:
Decoupaged some old photos onto plywood.....
Went through every movie, book, and file from the filing cabinet in the entire house, and PURGED (with the help of Mr. Adams)
Ordered and assembled 2 new desks....
So, if you know anyone that is looking for an oak Roll-Top desk, I have one for sale......$400
And it's in excellent condition!
Putting together and mailing care packages to the boys.
Some light gardening and sporadically hauling seaweed.
Harvesting Fall crops from the garden and cooking at home (most of the time).
Made jam....
Cleaned and organized the sewing room and got started making Christmas cards.
Business paperwork.....everyday.
Taking care of the animals....
Working on the quilt.....
It's FINALLY done, and here is a photo of the LAST stitch....
Browsing Pinterest at length....
Doing dishes, laundry, and vacuuming the house.......YUCK!!!
Hauling wood, building fires, stoking the fire, hauling ashes, repeat.....
Watching movies that we got for free from a garage sale...some winners and some losers...mostly losers.
And getting reacquainted with my recliner with a lap full of yarn and a crochet hook in my hand....
Just a little of this and a little of that while keeping the home fires burning.....my favorite thing to do!

A Law Of Nature
I learned something today.....something I knew but didn't understand: IT IS UNDENIABLE THAT EVERY LIVING THING NEEDS TO BE FREE. It is instinctual...not something that needs to be learned.
Every morning once it's light outside, the ducks start to clamor to be let out. I really don't like to let them out until at least 11:00 am to be sure they lay their eggs INSIDE the hutch instead of OUTSIDE the hutch in the brush, but this time of year they aren't laying eggs so it isn't as much of an issue. But, I like to keep things fairly routine so I tried to wait until 11:00 this morning, however, the ruckus outside went on and on and on until I thought I was going to go nuts, so I let them out at about 9:00 am. As soon as they saw me coming to open the gate they went nuts and the volume increased. I opened the gate and they all come boiling out, quacking away like crazy, ready to take care of business....
By the time I entered the house they had quieted down and seemed happy. Then....about an hour later I happened to glance out the window and this is what I saw....
They were all back inside the hutch, quiet and sleeping. Now, just why was is SO important to get out if they are back inside in less than an hour? And then it occurred to me.....they desire to be free. They desire to be free to choose to go out if they wish...even if it's better to be inside.
I just stood at the window and marveled at the deep truth.....the universal impact...I feel like I learned something truly profound today.

Termination Dust
The mountains were dusted with snow yesterday morning....I guess that now I have to face the fact that winter is coming....
Here's Verstovia Mountain from our living room window...
This morning I noticed that there was some ice on the ground in the garden, so I harvested the last of the Cauliflower...
And the sunroom is getting really cold at night, so I picked all of the Basil...
......and made Pesto of course!!!

A Beautiful Mess
As the years go by, my garden beds are getting more organized and tidy.....but it seems like the undeveloped and neglected corners are just getting messier! The funny thing is.....I noticed this year that my favorite spots in the garden are the "messy" ones. Places like.....
The herb garden that went to seed and got taken over by Poppies....
That narrow spot at the top of the pea row where you have to duck under the Apple Tree to get to the other side....
The arbor that's overgrown with Ivy. (Now that the deer haven't been eating it it's taking off!)
The entrance to the duck hutch where the Honeysuckle and Wild Phlox are out of control....
And the weedy perennial patch where the metal chickens like to hang out, are a few places that come to mind.
And here and there, over the organized rows and fences, there are brown, ragged, Sunflower plants leaning over because they are so heavy and full of seeds that are ready to eat!
It seems that the little tweety birds like these wild spots to.
So....although I will continue to build straight and tidy rows for maximum production of vegetables, I think I'll always leave a few spots in my garden untidy and unorganized..... because a beautiful mess seems to feed my soul.
