Free Lunch

October is "National Farm To School Month", and earlier I blogged about one of our local high school's visit to my garden.  Today they invited me to their "local" lunch.

Look at this delicious spread!!

Locally caught silver salmon on a bed of sauteed kale topped with sorrel and dill pesto, mashed potatoes, raw carrots and celery, biscuits made from Delta Junction barley flour, and Washington apple/ Sitka blueberry cobbler.  Delicious!!!

Everyone was excited about the meal...

And who can turn down a free lunch?

  2. That is not like any school lunch that I've seen. Are they able to do this all the time - or was it a special occasion? What fun -

  3. Sitka is trying to implement locally caught fish into the school menus on a regular basis, but the budget doesn't allow for it. The Sitka Conservation Society has a program to subsidize it and so fish is now available about once a month or so.
