Even though it was beautiful outside today it was very chilly! It's just as well I worked inside I guess. There is so much transplanting to do, but at least the tomatoes are done. They will be delivered to Penny out at Garden Ventures by the end of the month.
For a break at one point during the day I wandered outside and lifted the floating row cover to check the garlic greens...WOW!!!
And then I looked down the length of the row...WOW!!
This is what I call a "garlic miracle." You see, last year a fellow gardener named, James David, told me about a crop called "garlic greens." He said, "When you harvest garlic, choose some of the largest cloves to plant for next year and set all the small and misshapen cloves aside and plant them 2 inches apart in a separate bed, and when they come up in the spring pull them and use them like green onions." I was excited to try this new crop, so at harvest time last fall I was elated to find that most of my garlic bulbs held 4-5 enormous cloves, but was disappointed that I wouldn't have enough to try James David's method. And then, the miracle happened...one of the varieties, (Blanak) had mutated and had sprouted all sorts of green blades. I did not know what to expect when I pulled them, but imagine my surprise to see HUNDREDS of tiny cloves on these bulbs...totally unusable in the kitchen, but PERFECT for growing garlic greens! And look how good they came up! I pulled some today...they are wonderful!!
God said he would give me what I need, that I don't make things grow, He does. I can trust Him.
Ohhh, this looks like it would be cool to try! Maybe this year I'll add garlic to my garden.
ReplyDeleteGarlic does really well here. It feels expensive at first, but if you don't eat it all and save some to plant it doesn't take long to have more than enough. I SO recommend growing garlic! Hardnecks are the best for this country.
